Diabetic Care and Information
Invitation to our diabetic patients
As part of your regular diabetes care, we invite you to book an appointment for your annual foot check with one of our health care assistants . These checks are part of you annual diabetic review.
What is a foot check?
This is a simple, quick and painless assessment where the Health care assistant will:
• Examine the skin, nails and shape of your feet
• Check your circulation and sensation using a small piece of equipment
• Offer advice on how to look after your feet and reduce your risk of future problems
Why do we do foot checks?
People living with diabetes can develop reduced feeling (neuropathy) or poor blood flow (vascular problems) in their feet, which can lead to ulcers, infection or more serious complications.
The risks of not having a foot check
If foot problems are not detected early, they may progress to create serious outcomes — including ulceration, infection or in worst-case scenarios amputation. Public health data suggests our amputation rates in Bristol are about 4 times higher than the national average
By taking part in the annual foot check, you increase the chance of keeping your feet healthy, spotting problems early and reducing the risk of serious complications including amputation.
